Yes, aging is inevitable BUT how you do…now that is a choice. Everyday we make seemingly insignificant choices that impact our health potential. Though the affect of the these choices may not be obvious in the moment or even months later, they are affecting your health one way or another through the compound effect.
We’ve all learned the lesson of compounding money. Take a penny and double every day for 31 days and you end up with $10,000,000 in the bank. In health, the compound effect can work in much the same way by making daily choices that either support your health or don’t. It truly is that black and white.
To age well, simply make more healthy choices consistently each day, each week, each month than not. The problem that lulls many into a false sense of security, lies in how resilient our bodies really are. Though the majority of Americans don’t even come close to making the proper choices consistently and frequently enough, our bodies still manage to find a way to survive, to function, to live. However at what quality of life though?
The body can only take so much before it starts to complain. Complain by either gaining weight slowly and consistently, loss of energy, focus, concentration, frequent headaches and so on. Internally, organs start to malfunction, blood sugar levels remain chronically elevated, chronic inflammation develops, immunity starts to wain. Before you know it, your medicine cabinet begins to grow a collection of orange mini bottles and doctor visits become more frequent or worse.
As if this isn’t bad enough, rather than addressing the cause of the “warning lights,” we’ve been conditioned to simply try and medicate them away. Medications that in their own right are not to be taken lightly. All medications carry a spreadsheet full of undesirable, dangerous and in some cases, deadly side effects. You don’ have to believe me, just listen to one of their commercials. Sure, they show a family playing in the park, having a good time, enjoying life but then at the end: “don’t take this if you have nausea, vomiting or autoimmune condition. Take said drug may also cause in some cases cardiovascular events, even cancer in those taken said drug. Finally do not operate heavy machinery when taking said drug and for some using said drug may cause suicidal tendencies.”
I often find myself saying, “who raises their hand and says, yup give me some of that?” Maybe you yourself have done so or are faced with that decision right now? Either way, ask yourself…”is my ______________ condition the result of a lack of _____________ drug in my bloodstream?” Or could it be the compound effect of negative lifestyle choices made over time now rearing its ugly head? Only you know the answer.
I know for me, when I was diagnosed with an auto-immune condition and low testosterone, the answer was yes. Years of stress building my practice, starting a family, weight gain, beer and hot dogs on the golf course were already catching up with me.
Doctors wanted to put me on meds for both to which I politely said no thank you. I knew my autoimmune condition or low testosterone were not the result of a lack of drugs in my system. I choose to take personal responsibility for my health. It was time to get rid of the hot dogs, beer, late night ice cream and replace them with whole food nutrition. It was also time to get back to exercise consistently.
In other words, simple, positive choices stacked together over time to leverage the compound effect. The result, I’ve overcome my low testosterone and autoimmune condition naturally.
Your body is truly an amazing gift that can self heal and self regulate, if given the chance. How much potential remains for you, depends on where you are starting from. One thing I do know for sure, is the longer you wait…the harder, more painful and more expensive it will be to reclaim the health you may be taking for granted today.
My suggestion, don’t take it for granted. Take charge of your health today. You will never know what you may prevent tomorrow when you take responsibility today?
